Looking at the new novel and I thought I would share a scene or two from it. Maybe someday I will get back to it.

I need to find the willpower to get back to writing.

My mind is writing new stories, but the fingers are not putting them down on paper or in a document.

The Muse has been gone since before my heart surgery. She seems to be taking an extra-long vacation.

Does anyone know how to call her back?  I believe there has to be a way to get her to return and to inspire me to get off my ass and write.

If you have any advice, please leave a message down below in the Comment section. It will ask for some info on you, but that is not saved anywhere. At least I have never found it, so I can't use it to spam you. Feel free to leave a comment. Trust me, we have tested this and the info you leave is not used.

Hawks looked at his watch and it read eleven-thirty when Mike came out of his room and they left the motel. Hawks was hoping Juan would be at the fishing pier. He didn't want to chase him down again.

It took them ten minutes to arrive at the pier. As they pulled in the parking lot, Hawks said, “Mike, pull up here and let's wait.”

“You don't think this guy will double cross us, do you?” Mike said, looking around the nearly empty lot.

“I hope not, for his sake.”

“There's a car pulling in from the west drive,” Mike said.

“Maybe that's him. Just sit tight until we're sure he's alone.”

Juan climbed out of his car and walked toward the pier. He leaned up against the railing at the edge of the pier and just looked out toward the water. After a few quiet minutes, Hawks decided he must be alone.

“Mike, stay here with the car and watch my back,” Hawks said.

“Sure.”

As Hawks walked up to Juan, he kept his guard up. “Juan, what do you have for me?”

“Man, you sure got me in a lot of trouble.” The man's face was shiny with perspiration, and his hands shook slightly. Hawks could tell it had not been an enjoyable meeting he'd had with Carlos. “Carlos was pissed off about losing my shipment. He's not sure what his boss is going to do with me.”

“Didn't you explain that you had no choice?”

“Yes, but they couldn't find the goods where I said I dumped them. It looks like I stole them, trying to make a deal for myself.”

“No problem,” Hawks said, shaking his head. “I'll have a news release put out that the Coast Guard found them. That should cover you. Now, when is the next shipment coming in?”

“I don't know,” he said and paused. “Carlos wouldn't tell me anything because I lost this shipment. All he said was that if I get another shipment, I wouldn't be paid for either trip.”

Hawks nodded. “That's what you told me this morning. Give me your best guess as to when it's coming.”

He shrugged and said, “Thursday or Friday night.”

“I want a call as soon as you find out,” Hawks said, pointing his finger at him.

“Yes, I remember the number. Now I must go before someone spots us. There are not many fishermen out here on this pier,” he said, looking around.

“I'll be waiting for your call.” Hawks turned to walk away.

{In this selection, the tension between Hawks and his wife over her working starts again}

“What assignments do you have for us?” Hawks turned to watch Sadie's expression.

“I have two. Sadie, your job is to work with the radio operator. I want one of you to be here at all times. Steve, I would like for you to pick up Arthur when he gets here.”

“You mean I'm going back to work?” Sadie said excitedly.

“That's what the boss said before we left home,” Mike said and then grimaced at saying it.

Hawks knew he was about to be yelled at for playing this trick on her.

“Steve Hawks,” Sadie shouted. “Why didn't you tell me? And why did you let me believe that you didn't want me to work?”

“I never said I didn't want you to work, just that I thought it was too soon. Besides, I thought over what you said and decided you were right,” he said sheepishly.

“That's not an explanation, that's an excuse,” Sadie snapped and turned to walk toward the radio.

“I told you, you were going to make her mad,” Mike said, looking back to the clipboard he was reading over.

“You didn't help by throwing in the part about before leaving,” Hawks said, frowning.

“Hey, it just slipped out.”

“Thanks, I really needed that kind of help.”

It has been a long time since I updated this Blog.

The wife had surgery, so I had house duty and caring for her. She Is finally back to doing almost everything that she couldn’t do before the operation. Glad she went through with it.

On the writing front, it is time to start on the synopsis and query letter. I know who I want to query first to get her to take on my first book of the series. The list is in an order of my wants for an agent, not agents that do thrillers or crime novels, but who take on mainstream fiction.

May have to do an outline besides the synopsis, as some agents want one. I find these harder to write than the story itself.

I also need to get back to working on the next novel. This one has a lot of tension between the lovers.

Here is a scene for you to evaluate.

When they finished breakfast, Hawks decided to look in on Patricia before leaving for the office. “Patricia is still sleeping. I'll see you tonight,” he said as he came back into the kitchen.

“Steve, I've been thinking about coming back to work. Do you think it's too soon?” she asked, glancing over the paper at me.

“You don't have to come back yet,” he said. “Your leave of absence is not due for review for another two months and I think Patricia needs you here.”

“We can always get someone to watch her.”

They had discussed this before, but he still wasn't sure how he felt about it. “Yes, but she's only six months old and I think her mother should be the one she is with for a little longer.”

“Well, we can discuss it more tonight. With the change in mission, I may be needed,” she said.

“If I need a female agent, I can always use someone else. That way I won't have to worry about you,” he said and knew instantly it was the wrong thing to say.

“If that’s the way you think, then goodbye. I'm going to check on the baby,” she said, shoving her chair into the table.

“Sadie, I'm sorry. If you want to come back to work, it's fine with me,” he said, hoping she would change her mind.

“We'll discuss it,” she said and stomped out of the room.

Hope your new year is starting off good for what you want to accomplish. Let me and the others that read this know what you are doing in your life this winter.

Six weeks have gone by since the triple bypass.  People I meet say, you look really good or your color is good. Well, I feel good, except for the muscle pain in my legs and chest area.  They told me that it would take six months to a year for that pain to go away.

I have rehab twice a week.   Drive 40 plus miles to ride a bike and walk a treadmill. I can ride the same type bike here at home, as the wife has one. And I can walk outside or up and down the stairs to get my exercise until the heat breaks where I can walk outside again.

My wife has been taking great care of me. And keeping me from doing something that I should not do, like lift a heavy object or even cut grass. My youngest and his wife have been doing the yard work.  Maybe before too much longer I will be able to cut grass again.

I have not felt like writing, as the Muse is not back from vacation. I need to do a query letter and synopsis, but the energy is not there for it. Hopefully, that will return before long too.

This is not to say I have not been plotting in my head, just not on paper or the screen. I have three more stories started besides the one that is done in first person that needs to be changed to third person.

Okay, it is your turn tell us about what you have been doing or will do the rest of summer.  Leave a message down below and tell us about yourself.

Until next time,

John

What a month I have had. We first went into the Porter Hospital for an Angiogram on the 14th. Seemed like we just got started and he stopped. I finally asked the male nurse, are we through?

Not yet, he is on the phone with the surgeon. At that point I knew something bad was wrong.

A few minutes later, the female nurse, who was doing almost all of the work anyway, started undoing things and told me that we were through for today.

When we were back in the recovery the doctor came in and described the problem.  I had three bad blockages that he felt need to be fixed by surgery rather than trying to put stents in. One problem was they were too close to old stents and on a curve in a three-way artery.

About an hour later the surgeon came in and asked me if I wanted him to fix it. Of course, there was not much choice. He explained what he would do and that it would happen next week.

On the 22nd we showed at Porter at 5:30 in the morning, only to learn that I had been rescheduled for 8 am.

There we sat, almost all of the family, only one daughter-in-law could not be present.  It was nice to have my sister there too.

Then the time came and I don’t remember anything until after I was fully awake with this tube down my throat breathing for me.  It seems that I was a hard case for him as most of my veins were not good enough for use in the bypass. Varicose veins can not be used.

Five incisions in my legs later, and he finally found enough to the do the bypass. So, the triple bypass was completed and we go on from there.

I have been home now for 5 days and everyone keeps telling me you look so good. I do feel a little better, but the pain is going to take a long time heal, especially the legs.

I must say that they do a wonderful job at Porter Hospital in Valparaiso, IN. I had two of the best nurses that I have ever had. Tricia and Holly. You will never be forgotten. The doctor is great and really cares for his patients. He is in there at least twice a day and for me on a couple of days he was in there more than that. He even stopped in one morning and asked how I was feeling. Then said he was on his way to surgery and would see me later.

My family has been there for me the whole time and that is a great feeling to have them so close.

Now my wife and I are working to get me healed. She takes real good care to follow the checklist every day that I must complete and takes me on the walks that I have to have.

I am hoping that I will be back to normal in at least two months or less.

Then maybe I can get back to writing and trying to sell that first novel I finished before all of this happened.

Hopefully, you all are having a great start to summer.  Leave a message and tell us all what your plans are for summer.

New month and still working on Book 2.

Book One STEVE HAWKS - The Dilemma is completely finished.
I am so glad to finally have that one done after all these years of trying to work on it while I was teaching and then after taking a year off, I finished the rewrite and added more to it.
Now Book Two is being rewritten into third person. Won't have to add much here as it is already close 64,000 words long.

It is called STEVE HAWKS - Deadly Revenge

In this book, Hawks and members of the Espionage Terrorist Bureau go undercover in the Drug Cartel. Once the leaders are convicted, their families come after Hawks and all that are involved with the Drug War led by the Americans. It reminds you of the Bruce Willis Die Hard films. There is a lot more action than in the first one. Not to say there isn't action in the first one, this one just seems to have more bloody action parts.

I believe that after I finished this one, I will shop them around to agents. This will show that the series is being built by having two books done before sending out query letters to try to get them published. Even though the books stand alone, they are tied together by some of the actions in previous one.

As you can see, I have my work cut out for me. Books three and four are sitting on the computer waiting for me to go back and write more on them.

How about you?  What are you up to these days? Besides waiting for spring.
