Six weeks have gone by since the triple bypass.  People I meet say, you look really good or your color is good. Well, I feel good, except for the muscle pain in my legs and chest area.  They told me that it would take six months to a year for that pain to go away.

I have rehab twice a week.   Drive 40 plus miles to ride a bike and walk a treadmill. I can ride the same type bike here at home, as the wife has one. And I can walk outside or up and down the stairs to get my exercise until the heat breaks where I can walk outside again.

My wife has been taking great care of me. And keeping me from doing something that I should not do, like lift a heavy object or even cut grass. My youngest and his wife have been doing the yard work.  Maybe before too much longer I will be able to cut grass again.

I have not felt like writing, as the Muse is not back from vacation. I need to do a query letter and synopsis, but the energy is not there for it. Hopefully, that will return before long too.

This is not to say I have not been plotting in my head, just not on paper or the screen. I have three more stories started besides the one that is done in first person that needs to be changed to third person.

Okay, it is your turn tell us about what you have been doing or will do the rest of summer.  Leave a message down below and tell us about yourself.

Until next time,

John

What a month I have had. We first went into the Porter Hospital for an Angiogram on the 14th. Seemed like we just got started and he stopped. I finally asked the male nurse, are we through?

Not yet, he is on the phone with the surgeon. At that point I knew something bad was wrong.

A few minutes later, the female nurse, who was doing almost all of the work anyway, started undoing things and told me that we were through for today.

When we were back in the recovery the doctor came in and described the problem.  I had three bad blockages that he felt need to be fixed by surgery rather than trying to put stents in. One problem was they were too close to old stents and on a curve in a three-way artery.

About an hour later the surgeon came in and asked me if I wanted him to fix it. Of course, there was not much choice. He explained what he would do and that it would happen next week.

On the 22nd we showed at Porter at 5:30 in the morning, only to learn that I had been rescheduled for 8 am.

There we sat, almost all of the family, only one daughter-in-law could not be present.  It was nice to have my sister there too.

Then the time came and I don’t remember anything until after I was fully awake with this tube down my throat breathing for me.  It seems that I was a hard case for him as most of my veins were not good enough for use in the bypass. Varicose veins can not be used.

Five incisions in my legs later, and he finally found enough to the do the bypass. So, the triple bypass was completed and we go on from there.

I have been home now for 5 days and everyone keeps telling me you look so good. I do feel a little better, but the pain is going to take a long time heal, especially the legs.

I must say that they do a wonderful job at Porter Hospital in Valparaiso, IN. I had two of the best nurses that I have ever had. Tricia and Holly. You will never be forgotten. The doctor is great and really cares for his patients. He is in there at least twice a day and for me on a couple of days he was in there more than that. He even stopped in one morning and asked how I was feeling. Then said he was on his way to surgery and would see me later.

My family has been there for me the whole time and that is a great feeling to have them so close.

Now my wife and I are working to get me healed. She takes real good care to follow the checklist every day that I must complete and takes me on the walks that I have to have.

I am hoping that I will be back to normal in at least two months or less.

Then maybe I can get back to writing and trying to sell that first novel I finished before all of this happened.

Hopefully, you all are having a great start to summer.  Leave a message and tell us all what your plans are for summer.

New month and still working on Book 2.

Book One STEVE HAWKS - The Dilemma is completely finished.
I am so glad to finally have that one done after all these years of trying to work on it while I was teaching and then after taking a year off, I finished the rewrite and added more to it.
Now Book Two is being rewritten into third person. Won't have to add much here as it is already close 64,000 words long.

It is called STEVE HAWKS - Deadly Revenge

In this book, Hawks and members of the Espionage Terrorist Bureau go undercover in the Drug Cartel. Once the leaders are convicted, their families come after Hawks and all that are involved with the Drug War led by the Americans. It reminds you of the Bruce Willis Die Hard films. There is a lot more action than in the first one. Not to say there isn't action in the first one, this one just seems to have more bloody action parts.

I believe that after I finished this one, I will shop them around to agents. This will show that the series is being built by having two books done before sending out query letters to try to get them published. Even though the books stand alone, they are tied together by some of the actions in previous one.

As you can see, I have my work cut out for me. Books three and four are sitting on the computer waiting for me to go back and write more on them.

How about you?  What are you up to these days? Besides waiting for spring.

2019 started off with a busy schedule. I finally started writing again

and increased the size of the first novel in the Steve Hawks series

by 13,000 words. Then along came two biopsies.  Thank God they

turned out to be nothing serious. Now all I have left is to align the

chapter headings and re-number them so they are in order. After

that I can start rewriting book two and write more on books three

and four that I abandoned a couple of years ago to concentrate on

books one and two.

I am trying to decide if I want to market out book one to an agent

or publisher before I have them all done, or wait so the series will

be completed and more desirable to a publisher. Guess I will make

that decision soon. What are your thoughts on this?

How is the year going for you?

Leave a message down at the bottom where it says Comments and tell us about you. We really do want to know.

Here is a short piece out of one the eBooks.

All in the Family

THE DISCOVERY

Everyone was at breakfast except Carol.  Nobody had seen her all morning, so we guessed she skipped breakfast in order to sleep in late.

“Ladies and Gentlemen,” the Activities Director said, “we will be having different contests throughout the day.  Please check the handouts on your tables for something that might be of interest to you.”

“Linda,” Terri said.  “Have you seen Carol?”

“Not since last night when her and Georgia were talking about spoons.”

“She would love this trivia contest today.  I think I will go find her,” Terri said as she got up from the table.

“Okay, see you later,” Linda said.

Almost everyone had finished breakfast when Terri came back into the dining room looking like she was getting seasick.

“Terri, are you okay?” Tony asked.  Terri nearly missed the chair she was attempting to sit down in.  Luckily, Tony had fast reflexes and caught her.

“Terri,” Linda said. “What’s a matter?”

            “It’s Carol,” Terri said.

“What about Carol?” Tony asked as he was walking by.

            “Is something wrong?” Linda asked.

            “What is it?” Monica asked.

“She was found dead in her cabin this morning,” Terri said as she started crying.

Until next time,

John

When one hears that they have taken a sabbatical,

they think of a college professor.

Can a writer take one?

Or does it just get called writer’s block?

You write what you think is the perfect story,

Even though you know there is nothing that is ever perfect.

But the story comes to a point where you scream that is

the best ending, I have ever written.

Then you are told it is too short.

You scream again, but the neighbors didn’t appreciate that one.

In reference to the above, the perfect story ends just at the right place

where the characters and the story line are complete.

But, now you must/nay are forced to increase the story size.

Where to start… where to start.

This is what you have been thinking on for over a year.

After a too long of time, you think maybe I should give in and

increase the number of pages of a completed work, after all.

Your mind is cloudy with the thoughts of, How am I going to increase the size of this perfect story?

You look at the second-best story you have written and find it has over 65,000 words.

How did you go so short in the first one to have only just over 40,000?

Who is this mystical God that says a novel has to be more than 50,000 words?

Finally, I have become convinced that I must go back to work either with my mind creating or my fingers typing some more words.

Will I?

Only the future knows for sure.

Back in the Nineties when the Internet had started here via dial-up, we played an on-line game with a chat room. In this chat room, I stated writing a story, so much a night over a period of time. When finished it was suggested that I should publish that story, but I knew I would have to not use their on-line names, but make up new ones. That story is called All in the Family Cruise. After that I wrote three more short stories and published all of them as eBooks. Below is part of the opening of Dreamer's Paradise.

She walked out into the night air knowing it could be the last time.  She was going to put an end to it and move as far away as she could.  It was over, she knew it, but would he let her go. The air was bitter against her cheeks for a June night, but she couldn’t stop now, “not now” was all she thought.

Now it would stop. She waited for a car to pass and then crossed over to Second Street.  Feeling in her pocket, the gun was ready.  He was there, leaning on the lamp post as usual talking to his low-life friends.  He didn’t even turn around when she walked up.

      “What you want?” Jimmy asked.

“Nothing.  I just have this for you,” she said and handed him the divorce papers.

As usual he drew back his hand and was ready to hit her when she pulled the 22 caliber out of her pocket. He laughed and swung at her. She ducked and hit him in the leg with the first bullet.

She arrived at home a little after midnight and knew he wouldn’t be there yet.  She made sure all the doors were locked and then climbed into the cab that was waiting for her.  She told the driver, “Drive by Second and Main, please.”  She was curious to see if he was still standing there bleeding. As they drove through the intersection, she smiled and leaned back…
