It has been three months since I updated this Blog. It that timeframe, I took my wife to her 50th high school reunion down in Terre Haute. She was able to meet up with her best friend and had an enjoyable time with her and at the reunion.

We finally took a vacation, a small one at that. We met up with an old friend that we first met while in the Air Force in 1975. He and his wife were working at a campground over in Ohio. They own their own camper and do work camping for the summer. We had a nice visit and caught up on various topics.  We had last seen him several years ago when he came into South Bend for business. But, this was nice to stay in the same campground and do things together.  Besides, this was first time we met his wife. His grandson was staying with them and is a nice young man. We spent a day at Put-in-Bay Island and also had several cookouts and small sightseeing trips.

Then it came time for our grandson to leave for college. We had a nice send off dinner and he was gone the next day. We finally got see him again when we went up to his college this past Sunday; a long 4 hour drive, one way. It is a nice looking place. But, I expect it will be not so nice this winter when the cold winds and snow come in off Lake Michigan.

I still use my Amateur Radio Station. Actually, I upgraded the radio to a newer state of the art digital receiver type. It is a real nice unit. Can still talk around the world with this new one, too. I have a lot of antenna work to do yet before winter hits. Not to mention odd jobs around the house. I did get the porch painted this year. Been some time since I did it last.

No new writing as of yet. I have been researching different topics and techniques on self-publishing, in case I can’t get my novels picked up by a big-time publisher.  Hope to get one submitted before long.

If you have not read any of Lee Child’s books, you need to do so. His Jack Reacher series is very good.

Now, what have you been up to this summer?  Any special plans for fall or winter?

Below is the Synopsis of my novel Hawks Dilemma

Until next time,

John

Synopsis

Thrust into the unwanted leadership of the president's secret unit, Hawks must lead his agency while worrying about the female agent with whom he's fallen in love.

Espionage-Terrorism Bureau (ETB)is located in Washington, D.C. and under the direct control of the President of the United States. It has approximately twelve-hundred agents stationed throughout the world.  My book Hawk’s Dilemma explores the fight against crime that the president orders.

The action begins with Japanese Red Army terrorist kidnaping a professor's daughter thinking she belongs to the man they are after.  Steve Hawks (POV), a Field Director of E.T.B., pays the ransom and is told where the young woman is and that a surprise may await him.  He finds the young woman sitting on thirty sticks of dynamite.  After successfully freeing her from the danger, he escorts her home and discovers during an interview that her assailants were on their way to Washington, D.C.

The terrorists then attack one of the Capitol buildings.  Hawks and his men kill all the terrorists in order to save the hostages.  It is here that Senator Patrick's name first comes up, but the mystery of why they were looking for him is left unanswered.

Hawks is appointed by the president to take over ETB, when the director retires.  He is not happy with the appointment, but accepts the position under the condition that he is allowed to personally conduct investigations.

Hawks first investigation as Director of Espionage, Terrorist Bureau deals with an international gun smuggling ring involving military personnel and aircraft.  Weapons are being shipped to Japan for resale to terrorists’ groups in the Far East.  A sting operation is developed with Sadie MacKenzie, a Field Director, as the bait.  At the completion of the investigation, it is believed that all of the ring members were arrested (it is not until later we find out that the true ring leader was never discovered).  Also, during this investigation, Hawks' love blossoms for Sadie.

After their wedding at the White house, the president gives them a wedding gift of two weeks in Sweden.  It is on their honeymoon in Sweden that Sadie Hawks is kidnapped.  Hawks believes that a terrorist group is responsible.  He is finally contacted and told that if he wants his wife back, a trade between her and Taylor, an individual whom Hawks arrested for espionage, will take place in Washington.

Hawks returns home to arrange the trade.  While walking down the street he notices a car passing slowly by with Sadie in the back seat.  When he attempts to rescue his wife from the car, he is shot by a kidnapper.

After his release from the hospital, Hawks makes the final arrangements for the release of Taylor.  It is at this time, the president calls with a new investigation for him.  It seems a senator's son is involved in a murder and the president wants him to handle it personally.

Sadie is released the day after Taylor is turned over to the kidnappers.  After much discussion, Hawks finally agrees to let her work on the Taylor case while he moves on to the senator's son's case.

Both investigations are running simultaneously, with Sadie and Mike Phillips going after Taylor, while Hawks and Jim Horton are taking on the senator and his son.

Hawks solves the case on Tommy Patrick (senator's son), which entails murder and intrigue.  During the confession of the killer, he states for immunity he will tell who was behind the gun smuggling case of a year ago.

Mike and Sadie locate Taylor and his gang in Atlantic City and Hawks takes a team to New Jersey to be in on the arrest.  Hawks and Sadie capture the individual who shot him earlier, when Sadie was still a captive, and then go to the hotel where the rest are staying.  Upon announcement by Hawks, the individuals in the rooms start shooting.  Hawks shoots Taylor, killing him, and the others surrender.

The story ends during dinner in Caesars casino’s restaurant when Sadie tells Steve that he will be a father.

It is June and my grandson just graduated from high school.
Hard to believe that he is now 18 and will be going off to college.
I can still remember when he was young and played ball, went fishing with us and ran around the yard.

Good luck Michael John.

Two weeks ago, I was able to go to the Dayton Hamvention in Xenia, OH.
Walked about 10 miles in two days around the fairgrounds looking and re-looking at
all the Ham Radio equipment and supplies, talking to people I have met over the years and those I have worked on the radio.
It was very enjoyable to be there for my second time ever in 40 years of being an Amateur Radio operator.
Hopefully, I can go back again. Probably won't spend as much money as I did this time.

The writing has suffered lately, as I have just not been in the mood to write or edit.
I am going to have to get back to that if I want to get it done.

BUT, it is summer and time to be outside doing something more than sitting at a computer.

Need to get reading the Killing Floor by Lee Child or my friend who gave me the book will start telling me all about it.
Again, that takes sitting still for a long time. Well, at least a couple of days.

NOW IT IS YOUR TURN!

What are you up to this summer?

Please leave a message down below telling us what you are up to this summer.

Spring has finally arrived in Northern Indiana.
It is nice to get out and enjoy the sunshine.

This weekend is Mother's Day.
Don't forget to celebrate with your mother.
Even if it is just spending time with her will make her happy.

How many of you read Lee Child's books?

I read Gone Tomorrow as my first one. Once I got into it I could not put it down.
Now I have the Killing Floor to read. Just have to find the time to sit and read.
I find that Child goes heavy on descriptions. He describes every detail thoroughly. It is so detailed that you can picture yourself there with the characters.

With warm weather here, I have so much I need to do and want to do that sitting and reading is down the list.

Writing, too, has been postponed again as it is just too hard to get started when you want to be somewhere besides behind a computer.

As I wrote last time, my heart test came out okay. Now if I can just figure out what the problem is I am experiencing now, maybe it can be solved and I can enjoy doing more outside. As it is, I have to limit my sun exposure.

Here it is May and high school graduations will be taking place before long.
Our grandson will graduate on June 1st.  His plans are to attend a college in Michigan next year.
I hope he finds it to be what he thinks it will be.
His course of study will be Graphics Management. He has been doing some great things in his Graphic classes. They have a full printing shop in our local school. There is nothing I can think of that they cannot print.

Recently they added a metal cutting machine to make various things out of the metal. He has made me a couple of wonderful metal cuttings. One was a Bear face representing the Chicago Bears and another was the Air Force Shield.
Both hang in my living room. For Christmas last year, he gave us our last name cut out in metal so that it can be hung over the front door.

He is a great grandson and has been doing wonderful in his classes.
We wish him the best in future ventures in college.

Now it is your turn to tell us what you are up to, now that spring is here and summer is coming.
Just go down below to leave your comments. Just click on the word Comments down there and share your thoughts with us all.
We would enjoy reading what you are up to.

Until next time,

I hope your past two weeks have been good ones.
I went in last week for heart tests due to the pain in the chest and not being able to breathe.
They called this week and said the tests were all normal. No heart problems at all.
Now trying to figure out what to do next.
Have not felt like working on the novel.
I do hope to get back to it before long. But, I have to find the energy to do so.

Can't wait for the warm weather to get here so I can get of the house and do things outside. Maybe that will make me feel better.

I have a request for you that read this Blog.

How about going down to the Comments link and tell us what you are doing this time of the year.

I and the others that read this page will be very happy to know how and what you are doing.

Sorry for the short Blog this time. Hopefully, I will feel like writing more later.

Take care and have a great spring.

Until next time

John

A good friend of mine recently gave me a copy of Lee Child's Gone Tomorrow, a Reacher novel.
It was the first one I have read and I just couldn't put it down.

It starts in the wee hours of the morning, Reacher finds himself on a New York Subway with five other people.
Only one peaks his curiosity. His encounter with her starts the action that will keep you reading like it did me.

My friend is so into Reacher that he recently gave me Child's Killing Floor. I am very happy that he likes to read Thrillers, as I have asked him to be a Beta reader for me.
He did read Hawks' Dilemma and pointed out some things that he thought I might want to fix.

I was very appreciative of his suggestions.

Here is a Guest Post I hope you enjoy.

Is this gaming the system? If so, is it worth it?

Last night an acquaintance of mine hit a bestseller chart. That’s generally good news. Except this time, I was left scratching my head. Allow me to explain:

When I launched Filbert Publishing back in ‘01, I generally followed basic publishing rules, one of which was this: Always place your book in the appropriate category so potential readers can find it.

Not complicated, eh? It apparently is now.

Seems there’s a publishing strategy that maintains that customer discoverability is less important than bestseller status.

In this case, the author just released a thriller. Fiction. She apparently placed her book in the “Health, fitness, and Dieting” category. Uhhh… that’s nonfiction.

Turns out, the author found a category that wouldn’t be difficult to rise through the ranks. She placed her book in that category, sold a few copies, and boom… Amazon bestseller, in that particular category.

But… what about the reader? If you were perusing Health, Fitness, and Dieting to find a new book and you ran into a thriller… would that matter?

If you wrote a legit book in that category, would you appreciate your area being inundated with fiction, something not remotely related to your topic?

If you were a legit thriller author and were selling more books than this author, would you appreciate her bestselling status?

I don’t have any answers for this. In fact, I was pretty surprised to find fiction creeping into hard core nonfiction areas.

So here’s my question: Does this matter? Am I wondering out loud over nothing? Does best selling status matter?

I can’t wait to hear what you think… :)
